My Koo Self Defense's History

I started my training at Koo Self Defense (KSD) when I was 5 years old. I started as a white belt. There is a total of 17 ranks. I started at rank one. To move up a rank I had to do acertain amount of classes then I had to break a board with each legdoing a certain kick. I failed about three tests, But I never gave up. I tried to pass the next time.

I learned never to give up at KSD. In KSD classes you do stretching for 15 minutes and then you do punching and kicking drills on focus mitts and shields for 45 minutes with water breaks in between the class. At KSD I was taught stamina and self discipline. That really helped me in some situations. I was taught never to use my self defense skills in the wrong way.

Karate with Master Roger Koo is great for all ages. Master Koo's oldest student is 58 and the youngest is four. In time you can triple your strength and your flexibility at KSD. The thing that is good is that you don't have to hit 100%, you can start off by hitting softly and build up gradually.

I have built up my muscles now that I am doing karate with Master Roger Koo. I am better at my sports because my muscles have gotten
stronger. The endurance I have got from doing classes at KSD has also helped me with my running at school. If you want to be able to defend yourself then I would recommend KSD.

My favorite part of the training is 'hands combinations', you can hit as hard as you want and go at your own speed. Hands combinations are a series of punches you do on focus mitts.

I became the 57th black belt in Koo Self Defense on April 13, 1996 and had to break a total of 60 new plastic rebreakable boards with both hands and feet to get my black belt. I think that Koo Self Defense is good because it gives you a total body workout and teaches you how to defend yourself.

Since I began training, I have taken 384 classes to December 04, 1999.

I passed my 1st. Degree Black Belt test on September 4, 1999 and hope to become a Master one day.

The New Workout

Master Koo has developed a new program called Koo Self Defense's kick-boxing aerobics. It is a workout that makes your muscles strong and strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system. I have tried itmyself and think it is great.

It really gives you a total body workout. When I did a class, I could really feel the work in my legs. It is great if you want to build up your muscles. I also like it because you do the workout to music. I would recommend the KSD's kick-boxing aerobics if you want to get quick results.

Karate Past &Present

Master Koo used to teach and practice Japanese and Korean martial arts. He fought in tournaments and sometimes injured himself because in the old technique where you don't follow through and you lock your joints, and Master Koo locked his knee and injured himself while performing lock out techniques.

Then he decided to invent a new training program to increasepower. In old techniques they punch and kick in the air and try to reach perfection, but that does not strengthen your muscles.

If you get in a fight with some person who is on drugs the oldtechnique is useless because you have no power because all you did was do forms of kicks and punches in the air. Therefore you will not be able to stop the person on drugs because you will hit them but with not enough power to knock them out.

But with the new technique Master Koo has developed you will be able to stop the person. Because in Master Koo's technique youincrease your power because you hit mitts and shields instead of air and you learn to follow through.

Another glitch in the old technique is blocking. If you go up against a street fighter you would not be able to block their punches because they throw their punches wildy and fast. So by the time you block one punch you have another and another punch coming at you and SMACK!, you just got hit. In Master Koo's new technique you do not block. In his technique you learn to dodge and weave. Dodging and weaving is better than blocking because if you keep moving or weaving then you are a harder target to hit and in blocking you are an easy target because you do not move.

Other karate schools emphasize the belt and technique. In Master Koo's studio the belt is just a piece of cloth. Even though you earn a black belt, it does not mean that you can't get beat up by someone on the street. A belt only tells how long you been training and does not equate your ability when you fight on the street.

Most karate schools train on looking good when they punch and kick(art). Master Koo trains on how to defend yourself on the street or survive.
